How each piece is made
Every The Crafted Loop piece is crocheted by hand, one stitch at a time — from choosing the yarn to weaving in the final end. Here is the whole process, and roughly how long each stage takes.

Choosing the yarn and trims
Every piece begins with the material, not the pattern. We work with premium branded yarns chosen for how they hold their shape, resist pilling and age with use — never bulk filler yarn. Zari threads, beadwork, pearls, gota trims and genuine leather panels are matched to the yarn by hand, under daylight, so the tones sit together rather than fight each other. Because these yarns arrive in limited dye lots, a shade often cannot be reordered — which is exactly why a piece is rarely repeated.
02
2-3 hours
Swatching and shaping the pattern
A small swatch is crocheted first to set the tension: how tight each stitch pulls decides whether a tote stands up on a table or slumps. The shape is then worked out stitch by stitch — base rounds, side increases, the point where a potli begins to gather, the depth a phone sling needs to sit safely closed. Nothing is machine-knitted or panel-assembled from a factory blank.
03
8-30 hours
Hand-crocheting the body
This is the long part. One hook, one continuous thread, thousands of stitches, all placed by hand in our studio. A small potli takes the better part of a day; a structured tote or a densely textured piece can run across a full week of working sessions. Tension is held even across the whole body, and a dropped stitch means unpicking back rather than patching over — which is why no two makers' work ever looks quite identical.
04
3-10 hours
Embellishment — zari, beads and pearls
Decorative work is stitched on after the body is complete, never glued. Gold zari borders are couched down thread by thread, pearls and beads are individually anchored, and medallions or tassels are built separately and then attached so they hang correctly when the bag is carried. On festive pieces this stage often takes as long as the crochet itself.
05
2-4 hours
Lining, closures and hardware
Each bag is lined by hand with satin or a matched fabric so contents don't catch on the stitchwork, and so the piece keeps its shape when it's empty. Drawstrings, magnetic snaps, zips, jewel clasps, handles and leather panels are set in place and reinforced at the stress points — the base corners and the handle joins, where a handmade bag is most likely to give way over years of use.
06
1 hour
Finishing, checking and wrapping
Ends are woven in rather than knotted, the piece is blocked to settle its shape, and it is checked against the light for loose stitches, uneven trim and unsecured beads. Then it is photographed as the exact piece you will receive, measured, and wrapped by hand for shipping — tracked to the USA, UK, India, Australia and Europe.
What handmade actually means here
- Why no two pieces match exactly
- Colour, shade and texture vary slightly between dye lots and between sessions of work. Small differences in stitch, size and finish are the signature of hand work, not a fault.
- Why most pieces are one of one
- We work in single quantities far more often than in runs. When a limited yarn lot is used up, that exact combination of colour, tension and trim ends with it.
- Why the price sits where it does
- A price reflects the hours in the piece plus the materials — premium yarn, real zari, genuine leather, hand-set beadwork. There is no factory line absorbing the labour.
- Why ordering starts as a request
- Each order is confirmed personally: availability, making time if a piece needs to be recreated, and any personalisation, before anything is charged.
Questions about the craft
Are the bags machine-made or handmade?
Every piece is crocheted entirely by hand in our studio with a hook and thread. Nothing is machine-knitted, and no panels are assembled from factory blanks.
How long does it take to make one crochet bag?
Between roughly 20 and 80 hours depending on the piece. A small potli takes about a day of work; a structured tote or a heavily embellished festive bag runs across a week or more.
What yarn do you use?
Premium branded yarns selected for durability, shape retention and how they age — combined with real zari thread, beadwork, pearls and, on some pieces, genuine leather panels.
Why does my piece look slightly different from the photo?
Yarn dye lots vary and every stitch is placed by hand, so colour, texture and finish differ slightly from piece to piece. The photographs on each product page show the actual piece you receive.
Can I have something made specially?
Yes. We take custom orders for colour, size and occasion pieces — tell us what you have in mind and we'll confirm materials, timing and price before we begin.
